Events This Week
Flashdance tells the story of Alex Owens, a working-class girl from Pittsburgh with a dream of becoming a professional dancer. She works by day as a steel mill welder, and a bar dancer at night while aspiring to be accepted at a prestigious ballet academy. When Alex catches the eye of her boss Nick Hurley, their romance shows her the meaning of love and drives her ambition to pursue her dream. The original film became a pop culture phenomenon and included a Grammy Award-winning soundtrack. Hit songs performed include "Flashdance - What a Feeling," "Maniac," "Gloria," "Manhunt," and "I Love Rock & Roll." This show contains some mature content that may not be suitable for all audiences
Will Ryman and Rachel Owens introduce the ideas and processes behind their sculptures currently on view on the grounds of the Frist Center. Ryman discusses his larger-than-life sculpture, Rose on 65th Street (2011). Owens will discuss her sculpture, Inveterate Composition for Clare (2011). Both sculptures were created and publicly exhibited in New York City under the auspices of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.

Since 1991, the ATHENA Award and Scholarship Program has honored outstanding women of Nashville for their skills in business, leadership and service to the community. This year, 26 women from sponsoring organizations will be honored. Speaker Beth Harwell will present the 2013 ATHENA award to one of these phenomenal women.

Enjoy a three-course menu inspired by the Nashville Reads 2013 selection, Life of Pi. The meal will be followed by a discussion of the book led by Tennessee Humanities Director of Literature and Language Programs, Serenity Gerbman. Space is limited for this unique book-to-food event.
Christ Church Cathedral celebrates the genius and mastery of Johann Sebastian Bach at the seventh annual BACHanalia, a six-hour marathon music festival. Music begins at 5 pm and continues non-stop until 11 pm. Studio musicians, Nashville Symphony musicians, university faculty and students, and church musicians all contribute to this festive evening. They will perform a wide variety of Bach's masterpieces in expected and unexpected ways – everything from harp to marimba, organ to voice, jazz ensembles to harpsichord, and more. Drop in to this free event for a few minutes or a few hours.

A tribute to India.Arie's debut masterpiece Acoustic Soul and a celebration of the women of Thistle Farms. Local artists and musicians will cover the entire Acoustic Soul record including the hits "Video," "Brown Skin," and "Ready for Love." Hosted by 92Q's Jene India, the all female line-up includes Lo Carter and April Rucker, Kyla Jade of the Bobby Jones Super Choir, and additional performers.
Wild & Local will host this crawfish boil. Festivities include boiled crawfish and the fixin's from Riff's Fine Street Food, live music by Jeremy and Richie Lister, Fat Bottom Brewery beer, a crawfish eating contest and an aquatic tattoo contest judged by Black 13. Proceeds benefit Community Food Advocates.

Led by Mayor Karl Dean and Consul General of Japan Motohiko Kato, the Nashville Cherry Blossom Festival Sakura Walk's 2.5 mile course begins and ends in the Public Square. Commemorative t-shirts, food and drinks will be available. No registration required.

The Nashville Cherry Blossom Festival is a family-friendly celebration of Japanese culture. Events, entertainment, and activities include a musical showcase, tea ceremony, origami, martial arts demonstrations, a Cosplay contest, Japanese food booths and more! Cherry blossoms, or sakura, have been a symbol of the U.S.-Japan friendship since the Mayor of Tokyo donated 3,000 cherry trees to Washington, D.C. in 1912. Cherry Blossom Festivals are celebrated every spring all over the U.S. The Nashville Cherry Blossom Festival is organized by the Consulate-General of Japan, the Japan-America Society of Tennessee and the Office of Nashville Mayor Karl Dean. PLEASE NOTE: Road closure associated with this event! 3rd Avenue North between Charlotte and Union will be closed from 10 am to 4 pm.
The march will begin in front of First Baptist Church - Captiol Hill (625 Rosa Parks Blvd) at 10 am. The group will proceed north on Rosa Parks Boulevard to Charlotte Avenue, east on Charlotte to 7th Avenue and then north on 7th Avenue to the State Capitol. PLEASE NOTE: Road closures associated with this event! Road closures will begin at 9:45 am and end at 11:15 am and include the streets listed on the route above.

Let's move! Help fight childhood obesity by attending the 4th Annual Kids and Kites Day. Bring a kite, bring your family, bring lawn chairs and wear your tennis shoes. Car sharing is available in downtown Nashville! A great program for those who take public transportation to work and occasionally need a car for an appointment or meeting. Also, members are able to use the seven additional WeCars located at local universities: Belmont, Lipscomb, and Vanderbilt.
