Crowns is a funny and poignant gospel musical by Regina Taylor. The musical tells the story of a young girl from Brooklyn, NY who moves south to live with her aunts, a charismatic bunch of church-going ladies. These aunts share their lives, their hats and some good Southern religion with their niece through gospel songs and tales from their lives. The "crowns" are their hats and are both symbolic crowns and a means to express themselves -- their pride, their beauty, their endurance -- in the presence of God.
