    DETAILS

Bakersfield Sound pioneers Norm Hamlet, Don Markham, and Fuzzy Owen discuss their involvement in Bakersfield’s music and their work with Merle Haggard. Charles Owen, who signed Haggard to his 1st recording contract, produced and played steel on Haggard’s early records, and remained a part of the singer’s business organization. Pedal steel guitarist Hamlet joined the Strangers in 1967, and saxophonist and trumpeter Markham joined by the early 1970s. Hamlet and Markham play in Haggard classics and remain members of the Strangers today. Hamlet, Markham, and Owen visit the museum before Haggard performs at Ryman Auditorium on April 11. The interview and concert happen shortly after the opening of the exhibition The Bakersfield Sound: Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, and California Country.
