New Gallery - The Showroom!

77 Arcade. 347-306-1859. Another gallery has opened upstairs at the Arcade. Sera Davis also operates Davis Art Advisory from this space. Hours are Tues - Sat, 10 am - 5 pm.

 

New Retail - Eden!

174 A 2nd Avenue N. 736-7540. This small shop sells gifts, jewelry and home decor. Hours are Wed - Sun, 3 pm - 9 pm.

 

New Retail - French's Shoes & Boots Bargain Basement!

126 B 2nd Avenue N. 736-2934. This store sells boots, shoes, and purses at bargain prices. They are located in the basement level. Hours are Mon - Thurs, 10 am - 7 pm; Fri - Sat, 10 am - 8 pm; and Sun, noon - 6 pm.

Franklin Conaway: Making the Case for a Return of Streetcars in Nashville

Wed, May 7. Nashville Civic Design Center. 138 2nd Avenue N. #106. 248-4280. 5:15 pm. Free. Franklin Conaway, a national consultant specializing in urban redevelopment and passenger rail planning, will make his case for streetcars to return to Nashville at this special workshop presentation.

 

TDEC Great American Cleanup Clothing Drive

Wed, May 7 - Thurs, May 8. Bicentennial Mall, near the fountains. 862-8414. Donate good, unused clothing items from 7 - 9 am and 3 -5 pm. Volunteers will help unload cars and provide tax receipts. Additional donation drop-off days are Wednesday, May 14 and Thursday, May 15 with the same hours.

 

Bike to Work Day

Fri, May 9. Schermerhorn Symphony Center plaza. One Symphony Place. 7:30 am. Free. Bikers across Nashville will commute in to downtown and meet at the Schermerhorn plaza for free refreshments. Go to the Walk/Bike Nashville website to find out more about the various start locations and the corresponding schedule. Results from this week's great commuter race are also posted on their website. Everyone is encouraged to use alternative transportation to get to work on Friday!

 

Nashville Ballet's Big City Bop

Sat, May 10. Main Library's Auditorium. 615 Church Street. 862-5800. 10:30 am and 11:30 am. Free. Ballet performance designed especially for grades 5-8. Exposure to the audience to the art of dance in an abstract form.

 

Works with Words: Type Walk

Sat, May 10. Main Library. 615 Church Street. 862-8500. 11 am. Free. Join Works with Words artists Griffin Norman and Dan Brawner for a "type walk" around downtown as they point out interesting uses of words and typefaces. The tour begins in the Fine Art Gallery. 

 

Art Opening at Crema

Sat, May 10. Crema. 15 Hermitage Avenue. 255-8311. Free. 6 - 9 pm. Art opening featuring new illustrations by Nashville artist J.K. Lee. 

 

Mother's Day Champagne Brunch

Alvin Ailey's American Dance Theater

Tues, May 13 - Wed, May 14. TPAC's Jackson Hall. 8 pm. $30 - $65. Blending familiar music with different styles of dance, this company founded by the late Alvin Ailey performs shows that are not to be missed.
