Book Discussion and Signing: The Eyes of Willie McGee

Wed, July 21. Main Library. 615 Church Street. 5 pm. Free. Author Alex Heard will discuss and sign his new book, The Eyes of Willie McGee: A Tragedy of Race, Sex, and Secrets in the Jim Crow South. Davis-Kidd will be on-site to sell books at this free reception and book signing.

Gallery Talk: The Golden Age of Couture

Thurs, July 22. Frist Center for the Visual Arts. 919 Broadway. 244-3340. 7 pm. Free with museum admission. Join Trinita Kennedy, associate curator at the Frist Center, for a tour of The Golden Age of Couture: Paris and London 1947-1957. Complete your evening with the pop and folk sounds of Campfire Starter Kit in the Grand Lobby or visit with friends in the cafe.

 

Defense Seminar

Sat, July 24. FIT Nashville. 125 12th Avenue S. 712-7340. 1 pm - 4 pm. $39 in advance, $49 at the door. Using the Krav Maga system, participants will learn techniques used effectively by civilians, law enforcement and military personnel.

 

Music City Triathlon

Sun, July 25. LP Field (Lot R) and surrounding parts of downtown and East Nashville. 415-3520. 7 am - 12:30 pm. $75 or $125 depending on race option, free for spectators. Over 1,000 racers are expected to participate in the 2nd Annual Music City Triathlon. Swim the Cumberland River (1.5k), bike through East Nashville (40k), and run (10k) through downtown Nashville. Plus, there is a shorter course option with a 400-yard swim, 20k bike, and 5k run. Non-racers are encouraged to cheer on the participants! Race registration ends at midnight tonight.

NOTE: rolling road closures associated with this event include the Shelby Street Pedestrian Bridge, Broadway (westbound lane from 1st Ave to 3rd Ave), Union (3rd Ave to Woodland Street Bridge), 1st Avenue (southbound lane from Union to Molloy), 2nd Avenue (all lanes from Union to Broadway), 3rd Avenue (northbound lane from Union to Broadway and the Shelby Street Bridge to Molloy), and the Woodland Street Bridge (eastbound lanes). These closures will be in effect from 8:30 am until noon on Sunday.

 

3rd Annual Mayor's Home Ownership Fair

Sun, July 25. Bridgestone Arena. 501 Broadway. 1 pm - 5 pm. Free. The 3rd Annual Mayor's Home Ownership Fair is a one-stop shop for all home buying and home ownership answers. The fair offers the essential tools for preparedness during the process of purchasing a home in the Greater Nashville area. Browse informational booths from over 50 organizations including real estate firms, home builders, title companies, lenders and non-profits.
