Events this Week
Thurs, Aug 6. Various downtown art galleries. 5 - 8 pm. Free.* Nashville Association of Art Dealers presents a monthly event for art lovers and patrons to explore Nashville's diverse and growing art scene. On the first Thursday of each month participating galleries will remain open late inviting the public to enjoy art after work. Downtown galleries participating include Estel Gallery, Rymer Gallery, The Arts Company, Tinney Contemporary, LeQuire Gallery Annex, and the Frist Center for the Visual Arts (see exhibit details below). *Admission to the exhibition galleries at the Frist Center requires a fee for non-members.
215 5th Avenue North. 254-2040. 5 - 8 pm. Free. "The 12th Annual Avant-Garage Sale Expo" and "The Art Exchange." The 12th annual sale features art books, artwork, props, furniture, decor and more items fresh from the gallery archives. The sale and exchange will continue through August 22.
115 Rosa L. Parks Blvd. 251-8997. 5 - 8 pm. Free. "The very tremendously, boundless and romantic, perpetual history of light" features works by Harry Underwood. On display through August 29.
Frist Center for the Visual Arts 919 Broadway. 244-3340. 5 - 8 pm. Admission is $8.50 for non-members. Exhibits currently on display include "Chuck Close Prints" (on view through September 13), "Dean Byington: Terra Incognita" (on view through September 13), "Museums in the 21st Century" (on view through August 23), and "Seeing Ourselves: Photographs of Safe Haven" (on view through August 9).

Fri, Aug 7. Around downtown. 11 am - 1 pm. Free. Put your walking shoes on and walk with fellow downtown employees during your lunch break! Water stations will be located on each route. Route maps and more info are available online. This monthly event will continue on the first Friday of every month.

will offer a performance from the upcoming production of Fall of the House
of Usher as soprano Sabrina Warren sings a few excerpts from the opera.
Nashville Film Festival will follow with a screening of the ground-breaking
documentary film Glass: A Portrait of Philip in Twelve Pieces, featuring
visual artist Chuck Close, whose images of Glass are among those included in
the Frist Center's "Chuck Close Prints: Process and Collaboration" exhibition. 10th Annual Mayor's First Day Festival Sun, Aug 9. Sommet Center and Hilton Park. 501 Broadway. 2 - 5 pm. Free. Join Mayor Karl Dean for this free community celebration to welcome the beginning of a new school year. This year's festival features family fun, educational entertainment, and free school supplies. Plus, Mayor Dean is hosting a food drive to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank. Please bring a non-perishable food item to help feed the hungry in Nashville.
Skype Session Book Talk: The End of Overeating Tues, Aug 11. Main Library. 615 Church Street. 862-5800. 11:30 am - 1 pm. Free. Americans are collapsing under the weight of "hypereating," which former FDA commissioner David Kessler believes is a national disease, not a failure of willpower. Enjoy delicious and wholesome food samples as Kessler talks about his new book, The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite, in a special Skype "appearance" moderated by Scott Weiss and Laura Button of Intentional Food. Feel free to bring a lunch.
Late Summer Harvest Tomato Dinner benefitting Slow Food Nashville Wed, Aug 12. The Capitol Grille at The Hermitage Hotel. 231 6th Avenue North. 345-7116. 6:30 pm. $45/person, additional $20 for wine pairings. Executive Chef Tyler Brown will pay homage to local farmers by hosting this creative six-course dinner. The Capitol Grille will donate a portion of the proceeds to Slow Food Nashville.

Call for Volunteers!
The Music City BBQ Festival will be held in Riverfront Park, August 28 - 29. Volunteers are needed to assist with various areas. Volunteers will receive free admission to the festival ($10/day or $15/two-day pass) and an official event t-shirt. Shifts are available both days and are a minimum of 3 hours long.
