Findings from the third annual downtown business census-survey were made available in November, 2005. Having three consecutive years of data, the Nashville Downtown Partnership now has a more accurate count of employees by location and by industry sector and an overview of employee demographics and business perceptions of downtown.
- The 2005 database included 1,390 separate entities (businesses, organizations and government offices) and a total employee count of 46,867 in the survey area (bounded by the interstate loop on the south and west, the Cumberland River on the east, and Jefferson Street on the north).
- Looking at their position on October 1, 2005, 63% of the survey responders said their business has shown improvement over the past two years.
- The overall perception of 56% of the 2005 responders was that downtown is clean or very clean 61% said downtown is safe or very safe. Over three-fourths (76%) of the responders indicated that public inebriates, transients and vagrants have some impact on their employees and/or clients.
- The Nashville Downtown Partnership analyzed the write-in comments and overall responses for trends and follow-up reports. All specific concerns have been forwarded to the relevant Partnership committees and were factored into their 2006 action plans and budgets.
- These annual census-survey findings allow the Partnership to (1) provide prospective developers and tenants with location-specific demographic data and customized maps and (2) implement proactive downtown business recruitment and retention strategies.
