315 12th Ave S. 942-7153. This new store in The Gulch features ladies clothing and accessories. Hours are Mon - Thurs, 10 am - 7 pm; Fri - Sat, 10 am - 8 pm; and Sun, 11 am - 5 pm.

 

New bar: Benchmark!
117 2nd Ave N. 748-9006. This new sports bar is also open for lunch and dinner. Hours are Mon - Sun, 11 am - 3 am.

 

New retail: Shelley's Southwest Designs!

Urban Design Forum: The Future of the Werthan Packaging Site

THURSDAY, AUGUST 18, 5:30 PM - 7 PM
LOCATION: NASHVILLE CIVIC DESIGN CENTER FREE

For the past 80 years Werthan Packaging, Inc. has been manufacturing pet food bags on its nearly 14-acre campus on the northern border of Historic Germantown. The company is moving its operations to a facility in White House, TN, and is in the process of selling this property in Germantown. Owner Tony Werthan and Chad Grout of Chas. Hawkins Company, Inc. will discuss the history of the site and the redevelopment potential of the land.


Night Market

Shop "under the stars" at the Night Market! Enjoy shopping, wine from the cash bar, beverages from merchants, live music, free samples, artisan booths, and much more. Night Market will be held both inside the Market House and outside in the farm sheds, with all Market House restaurants and shops open.


5th Annual Dragon Boat Race and River Festival

SATURDAY, AUGUST 20, 8 AM - 4 PM
LOCATION: RIVERFRONT PARK FREE FOR SPECTATORS

The Cumberland River Compact and the Tennessee Scenic Rivers Association host the 5th Annual Dragon Boat Race and River Festival in Riverfront Park. The festival combines the excitement of racing with the beauty and spectacle of Nashville's diverse culture. In Chinese tradition, the dragon is a symbol of health and prosperity, and dragon boat racing inspires health and fitness among participants as well as spectators. The races begin at 8:30 am and four teams real race approximately every 10 minutes. A new feature this year, Dragon Land offers attractions, entertainment and education for children.

 

The Private Life of Ancient Women: Persian Egypt

SUNDAY, AUGUST 21, 2 PM - 4 PM
LOCATION: TENNESSEE STATE MUSEUM FREE

An illustrated lecture by Annalisa Azzoni, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Hebrew Bible and Ancient Near Eastern Cultures at Vanderbilt Divinity School.  Dr. Azzoni will explore the daily lives of Egyptian women during Persian rule from 500 to 400 B.C. Azzoni's research is based on papyrus documents preserved from the Jewish settlement on Elephantine Island in the Nile River. She will focus her lecture on two women, one Jewish and one non-Jewish.

 

Midday Cruises on the General Jackson

Take a relaxing midday boat ride aboard the General Jackson. Enjoy views of the downtown skyline while dining and enjoy a performance by Steve Hall and the Shotgun Red Show. The hilarious duo will bring their jaw-droppin, gut-bustin performance show to the stage, offering one of the most animated and entertainingly interactive shows to ever cruise the Cumberland River. These midday cruises departing from Riverfront Park can be booked through Sunday, August 21.

 

 

Concerts in the Courtyard: Annie Sellick and The Hot Club of Nashville

The library's hit music series continues with concerts in the courtyard! Bring your lunch to the library courtyard and enjoy free music by top acts in many genres every Tuesday through October 11. Annie Sellick and The Hot Club of Nashville will perform on Tuesday, August 23.

 

Lyrics for Lyric Benefit Concert

TUESDAY, AUGUST 23, 7 PM - 10 PM
LOCATION: ROOSTER'S TEXAS-STYLE BBQ AND STEAKHOUSE $10

Bluegrass legend and IBMA Award winner, Mark Newton, hosts the Lyrics for Lyric show to benefit two-year-old Lyric Alana Frizzell. Frizzell was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive form of leukemia at ten months of age. Lyric is the daughter of Crystal Singleton and Corey Frizzell and great niece of country stars David and Lefty Frizzell.
