New bar: Cowboy Kewl!
308 Church Street. 615-242-9773. This new sports bar features live music on Friday and Saturday nights. Fill out their "request a game" form online before heading out to watch your favorite game on one of their TVs. Hours are Mon, 4 pm - 3 am; Thurs - Fri, 4 pm - 3 am; and Sat - Sun, 11 am - 3 am.

Bartender Bash

THURSDAY, AUGUST 25, 6 PM - 8 PM
LOCATION: UNION STATION HOTEL $25 IN ADVANCE; $30 AT THE DOOR

Nashville Lifestyles celebrates the sixth annual Bartender Bash. Local bartenders will compete for Best Grey Goose Martini and Most Creative Cocktail. Admission includes two complimentary Grey Goose cocktails, tastings from each bartender, hors d'oeuvres and live music. A celebrity panel of judges will make the final decisions, but event attendees will vote for the People's Choice Award.


Dance Performance: Company Rose's Serendipity 3

THURSDAY, AUGUST 25, 6:30 PM
LOCATION: FRIST CENTER FOR THE VISUAL ARTS FREE

Company Rose will create a space in the Frist that unites movements, sounds, styles, and images from Andy Warhol's works and worlds. The dance company will combine influences from Merce Cunningham, John Cage, the Velvet Underground, Judy Garland, Debby Harry, and Elvis Presley.


SEC Football Kickoff Block Party: Barbecue, Bourbon and Beer

THURSDAY, AUGUST 25, 5 PM - 10 PM
LOCATION: THE GULCH $15

The Southeastern Young Alumni Charitable Foundation (SEYA) will host the 2011 SEC Football Kickoff Block Party. This year's block party will feature the first annual "People's Choice Barbecue Contest," where some of Nashville's finest barbecue restaurants will compete for the grand prize. Admission includes two complimentary drink tickets and tastings from each featured barbecue vendor. Live entertainment by Maynard Terrace and The Bobby Cool Band. Celebrate the start of SEC football season with "beer, barbecue, and bourbon" at the best block party in town. All proceeds will benefit the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital.


Music City Festival & BBQ Championship

FRIDAY, AUGUST 26 - SATURDAY, AUGUST 27, 11 AM - 11 PM ON FRIDAY; 10 AM - 11 PM ON SATURDAY
LOCATION: RIVERFRONT PARK

Over 120 BBQ cook teams will compete for cash and prizes in this Tennessee State Championship event sanctioned by the Memphis BBQ Network and the Kansas City BBQ Society. Live music from 5 pm to 10:30 pm on Friday and from 7 pm to 10:30 pm on Saturday. Headliners include The Marshall Tucker Band on Friday night and Ronnie Milsap on Saturday night. Additional activities include the Kid Fun Zone, the Music City Car Show and more. Saturday attendees can buy a special pass to sample the teams' fare during the "Peoples Choice Award" in the Grand Ol' Porker Arena. Click here for tickets and pricing information.

Pharaohs and The Patriarchs (and Matriarchs) of Israel

SUNDAY, AUGUST 28, 2 PM - 4 PM
LOCATION: TENNESSEE STATE MUSEUM FREE

A lecture by Dr. Jack M. Sasson, professor of Judaic and Biblical Studies at Vanderbilt Divinity School. Pharaohs are mentioned a number of times in the Old Testament and not just in the stories about Joseph and Moses. Dr. Sasson will discuss the stories of some who can be identified with specific historical figures and others whose Egyptian names remain unknown.


Celebrating the Music of Motown Legend Barrett Strong

SUNDAY, AUGUST 28, DOORS AT 6 PM; SHOW AT 7 PM
LOCATION: B.B. KING'S BLUES CLUB & RESTAURANT $20

BMI, The Nashville Blues Society, and Galaxie Agency present a celebration of Barrett Strong. Strong's songwriting accolades include "Heard it Through the Grapevine," "Just My Imagination," "Papa Was a Rolling Stone," and many others. The Bart Walker Band, Jimmy Hall, John Ford Coley, Mike Farris, The McCrary Sisters, Sarah Buxton, Chelson Strong, Eliza Neals, Maria Blues, James "Nick" Nixon, and Markey will perform. The show will also include a Q&A with Barrett Strong on stage. Please come and support this American songwriting legend! Proceeds from this benefit will go towards assisting with Mr. Strong's care.


Artist in Residence: Connie Smith

MONDAY, AUGUST 29, 7 PM
LOCATION: COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME AND MUSEUM $45

Legendary vocalist Connie Smith will bring her incomparable voice, her catalog of hits and some of her favorite collaborators when she takes the Ford Theater stage as the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum's 2011 Artist-in-Residence.  Smith serves as host and curator for these intimate evening performances, which are slated for 7 pm on August 29 and September 12.


Concerts in the Courtyard: Maura O' Connell

TUESDAY, AUGUST 30, 11:45 AM - 1 PM
LOCATION: NASHVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY FREE

The library's hit music series continues with concerts in the courtyard! Bring your lunch to the library courtyard and enjoy free music by top acts in many genres every Tuesday through October 11. Maura O'Connell performs on Tuesday, August 30.


Boot Camp at FIT

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 31, 8 PM - 9 PM ON WEDNESDAYS; 8 AM - 9 AM ON SATURDAYS

M.A.D.E. Fitness trainers Omar Edward and Bronson Colbert host fitness boot camps on Wednesday nights and Saturday mornings at FIT Nashville.


 

73rd Annual National Folk Festival

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 2 - SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 4
LOCATION: BICENTENNIAL MALL FREE

The National Folk Festival is a three-day event and is free and open to the public. Celebrating the traditions of American culture in music, dance, crafts, foods and more, the National Folk Festival offers something for everyone. Cruise to the Titans' Games

There are several "alternative transportation" options to get to LP Field for Tennessee Titans' games. One option is the Ultimate Sunday Football Tailgate Boat Cruise aboard the Music City Queen! Highlights and pre-game analysis are piped through the boat via satellite. Food, fun and football are the focus of this cruise down the Cumberland River!
