2013 SEC Men's Basketball Tournament

The Southeastern Conference Men's Basketball Tournament hits downtown through this weekend! Check out the tournament's schedule online. The winner of the 11-game tournament will receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Going to the games? Park for free in LP Field Lot R and catch a shuttle ride with BEEP or pedal a Nashville B-cycle to the event (TIP: promo codes will be distributed for a free B-cycle 24-hour membership at Lot R's B-station during the tournament).


March Class: Herbals 101

THURSDAY, MARCH 14, 6 PM - 7 PM
LOCATION: THE TURNIP TRUCK URBAN FARE FREE

Learn about popular herbs being used today for medicinal purposes, their general healing properties and how to take them. Advance registration is required. All participants will receive a 10% discount on groceries and merchandise following the class. This session will also be offered on Saturday, March 16 from 10 am - 11 am.


Lenten Symposium with Dr. Jeremy Begbie

FRIDAY, MARCH 15 - SATURDAY, MARCH 16, FRIDAY: 7 PM - 8:30 PM; SATURDAY: 9 AM - 12 PM
LOCATION: CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL TWO DAY PASS: $25; ONE DAY PASS: $10

Dr. Jeremy Begbie of Duke Divinity School will examine how music has unique powers to reach into the depths and heights of the Gospel. Dr. Begbie is a noted authority on the interface between theology and the arts, particularly the interplay between music and theology. The symposium begins Friday night with an informal presentation featuring piano interludes. Dr. Begbie will deliver two lectures on Saturday morning: “Reshaping Lament: Music and the Psalms of Sorrow” and “Joy in the Morning: The Music of Resurrection”. The lectures will include recorded music and piano performances.

 

Nashville's 1st Annual St. Patrick's Day Celebration

SATURDAY, MARCH 16 - SUNDAY, MARCH 17, SATURDAY: 10 AM - 11 PM AND SUNDAY: 11 AM - 11 PM

The first annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration will be held on Broadway between 3rd and 4th Avenues. Festivities include a large beer garden, Irish music and traditional Irish dancers. NOTE: Road closures associated with this event! Broadway will be closed between 3rd and 4th Avenues beginning at 7 am on March 16 and ending at midnight on Sunday.


Connecting Disciplines: An Archaeologist's Perspective

SATURDAY, MARCH 16, 11 AM
LOCATION: FRIST CENTER FOR THE VISUAL ARTS GALLERY ADMISSION REQUIRED

Presented by Dr. John Janusek, director of graduate studies and associate professor, anthropology, Vanderbilt University. Dr. Janusek will discuss the development of complex societies and cities in the South American Andes, like those represented in the Frist Center's exhibition Exploring Art of the Ancient Americas: The John Bourne Collection. He will cover a variety of topics including human identity, space and place, and ritual practice. This program is presented in partnership with the Center for Latin American Studies at Vanderbilt University.


Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines

SATURDAY, MARCH 16, 3 PM
LOCATION: NASHVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY FREE

A free screening of this film that traces the evolution and legacy of Wonder Woman. From the birth of the comic book superheroine in the 1940's to the blockbusters of today, Wonder Women! examines how popular representations of powerful women often reflect society's anxieties about women's liberation. Part of the Community Cinema Nashville screening series, which is a collaboration of ITVS, Nashville Public Television and the Nashville Public Library.


Saint Patrick's Day Concert with the Providence Players

SUNDAY, MARCH 17, 2:30 PM - 3:15 PM
LOCATION: NASHVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY FREE

The Providence Players, an ensemble of musicians performing on the recorder and keyboard, will present a Saint Patrick's Day concert in the library's courtyard gallery. They will play favorites such as Molly Malone and My Wild Irish Rose.

Please save the date for our 10th annual Downtown Home Tour presented by PARKS on Sunday, April 14. In honor of the 10th year, ten residential buildings will be on the tour. Don't miss this great annual event!

Nashville B-cycle

Need to run a quick errand that is too far to walk but too close to drive? Use Nashville B-cycle! 190 bright red bikes are located at 20 automated B-stations within three miles of downtown. 24-hour memberships are $5 and annual memberships are $50. Nashville B-cycle is priced for quick rides. After joining, you can take an unlimited number of rides during your membership period with no additional charge for the first hour of any ride. Usage fees apply for all rides that exceed one hour. Nashville B-cycle: bikes you love and leave!
