The Cumberland: Superhighway Through History

THURSDAY, MAY 3, NOON - 1 PM
LOCATION: THE BRIDGE BUILDING FREE

Although not as large as the Tennessee and Mississippi Rivers, the Cumberland River has been no less important as a transportation network. As part of the larger “super-highway” network of which the former are gems of this network, the Cumberland has served as an integral transportation route since humans have inhabited Tennessee. It is no accident that Nashville was built on the Cumberland, because even during pre-Columbian times, the area was the center of a sizeable salt industry, its salt springs attracted plentiful game, and its flood plains provided for excellent soil for farming. Like any highway, the river was a convenient route that brought prosperity but also misfortune and environmental changes. Enjoy this lecture by Graham Perry, Curator of Social History, Tennessee State Museum.

The best way to buzz through traffic and road closures is via Nashville B-cycle! Look for the bright red bikes located at 36 B-stations around town. The $5 access pass includes an unlimited number of trips that are 60 minutes or less over a 24-hour period. The 7-day pass is only $10 and an annual membership is $50. TIP: keep all rides under 60 minutes to avoid overage fees. B-cycle has a responsive website and an app.
