Have you ever wanted to play the banjo? Did you know that the instrument was created by enslaved Africans and their descendants in the Caribbean and colonial North America? Join us to learn more about the banjo and try it yourself with guidance from musician and educator Joe Z. Johnson, a multi-instrumentalist, ethnomusicologist, and advocate for Black stringband music. This hands-on program will dig into the African and African-American roots of the banjo as well as Middle Tennessee Black banjo history. Participants will also receive a clawhammer technique lesson and learn a song. Old-time banjos provided, or bring your own. Recommended for ages 7 and up, but all are welcome. Taylor Swift Education Center. Limited seating. Included with Museum admission. Free to Museum members.
