Please Help. Don't Give.

Panhandling is not the answer.

Giving to panhandlers is a lose-lose situation. You lose because they often use your money to support their addictions to alcohol and drugs and they lose by continuing these destructive behaviors.

Want to help? REDIRECT YOUR GENEROSITY.

  • Support local organizations that provide services.
  • Less than $200 can make one week of transitional housing possible for someone in need.
  • Invest in long-term solutions by giving volunteer or financial support to local service providers.

RESPONDING TO PANHANDLERS

So, what should you do?

  • Walk with certainty and confidence. Make eye contact and acknowledge the person with a nod.
  • If panhandlers are being aggressive or intimidating, immediately call 615-862-8600 for police assistance.
  • Respond politely by saying "no," "sorry," or "if you dial 2-1-1, they can help you."
  • If you want to offer something, consider bottled water or food gift certificates instead of cash.

HELP IS AVAILABLE

  • Anyone can dial 2-1-1 to find out how to get counseling, food, clothing and shelter.
