The Nashville Downtown Partnership is a private sector nonprofit corporation whose core purpose is "to make Downtown Nashville the compelling urban center in the Southeast in which to LIVE, WORK, PLAY and INVEST." Organized in 1994, the Partnership has transitioned into a downtown leadership organization that focuses on business recruitment and retention, residential and retail development, public space management, access and transportation, communications and marketing.
The Nashville District Management Corporation is the 501 (c)(3) downtown Central Business Improvement District (CBID). The organization is funded, in part, by annual assessments of privately owned properties within this CBID. The Partnership administers all CBID services, including supplementary clean and safe services.
The downtown CBID was initiated in 1999 and in 2003, was renewed for a five-year term (through 2007). In 2007, this district area (PDF CBID map) was expanded southward and renewed for a 10-year term (2008 through 2017).
From 1999 through 2008, property owners in the downtown CBID invested over $6 million to supplement city services and to enhance the downtown business, retail and residential environment. Over 50% of the CBID budget is invested in clean and safe services each year.
In 2007, a second downtown improvement district (PDF GBID map) was initiated for a ten-year term in The Gulch. Through a 501 (c)(6) nonprofit corporation Gulch Business Improvement District, Inc. (GBID), these property owners are investing in the future of this dynamic mixed-use neighborhood. Their Board of Directors contracts with the Nashville Downtown Partnership to provide clean and safe services and administrative support.
The success of Business Improvement districts is based on a strong private-public partnership. Property owners speak with a unified voice on issues related to their downtown investments.
